Program Goals

The purpose of this educational activity is to review the clinical utility of D-dimer in the diagnostic management of venous thromboembolism.

Target Audience

Clinical laboratory technicians, emergency room physicians, and primary care providers.

Educational Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Recognize venous thromboembolism, deep-vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and the associated clinical consequences.
  2. Discuss the use of D-dimer in the exclusion of patients with clinically suspected first-episode or recurrent deep-vein thrombosis.
  3. Discuss the utility of D-dimer in the determination of length of anticoagulation after first-episode deep-vein thrombosis.
