Diagnosis and Management of Autoimmune Thyroid Disease

Program Overview

Despite being the most common autoimmune disorder in the United States, knowledge surrounding thyroid disorders has not received the attention it deserves. This is unfortunate because the diseases associated with the thyroid, among them the most common thyroid disorder - Graves’ Disease (GD), are completely manageable and in some cases curable. Additionally many diagnoses based on the symptoms of thyroid disorders are directed to non-endocrine specialties thereby allowing the disease to progress. Proper education regarding testing modalities is needed for healthcare providers in order to have a more beneficial impact on patient care. There is a need for increased knowledge and recognition of thyroid symptoms and confidence in the ability to uncover the origin of patient symptoms.

Target Audience

The target audience will be Physicians, Physician's Assistants, Nurse Practitioners and Registered Nurses, Laboratorians, and other Healthcare Professionals involved in the management of patients with thryoid disease.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify the signs, symptoms, and various causes of hyperthyroidism.
  2. Describe the diagnostic tools available to confirm or exclude a diagnosis of hyperthyroidism and Grave's disease.
  3. Recognize the extra thyroidal signs and systemic manifestations associated with early versus advancing disease.
  4. Differentiate between the pathophysiologies of autoimmune vs. non-autoimmune thyroid disease.
  5. Describe the rationale for using different thyroid function lab tests (total of T4, free T4, total T3, free T3, and TSH) as well as thyroid receptor antibody levels for patient monitoring.
