Program Goals

The purpose of this educational activity is to review why washed, perioperative salvaged red blood cells (RBCs) are preferable to unwashed RBCs and stored blood.

Target Audience

Orthopedic Nurses, Surgeons, Operating Room Nurses and Anesthesia Providers.

Educational Objectives

Upon completion of this activity participants should be able to:

  1. Discuss an overview of intraoperative cell salvage and why perioperative cell salvage is beneficial.
  2. Describe the methods available to treat patients’ perioperative blood loss and challenges or complications with each.
  3. Explain the benefit of Perioperative Autologous Transfusion over Allogeneic Transfusion.
